Ten Things Business People Can Learn from Nikola Jokic

The story of Nikola Jokic and his life could be called usual. The hard work, true values and persistence in achieving one’s goals can be recognized in many other segments outside sports as well.

Nikola Jokic was the NBA Most Valuable Player in the 2020/21 season. Everyone knows how important the MVP title is and what a great recognition this is. Nikola is the first Serbs to be pronounced (unofficially) the best basketball player in the world and the third European to do so, but also the lowest ranking NBA draft player to achieve this – he was the 41st pick in the 2014 draft.

At the same time, Nikola is a young man who functions similar to the way many successful business people do, so a lot of them are recognizing themselves in his recent statements. Those who are just emerging are learning from Nikola’s example.

1. “This is a big accomplishment, but it is not something I’ve achieved alone. I couldn’t have done anything alone. This is an individual award, but it is the result of a whole organization’s efforts.”

Nikola Jokic always emphasizes the importance of team work, which should be a good recommendation for all business people too. Perhaps some awards or bonuses go to individuals, but the biggest successes are always the result of joint efforts of the entire team and good job organization.

2. “Each coach gave me the freedom to do my own thing. Each one allowed me to show my own skills.”

The role of managers is not just to run the operations and take care for the norm to be fulfilled. One of the most important roles of a manager is to recognize the potentials of the employees and find the right place for them within a team, that is, to give them the opportunity to display their knowledge and creativity.

3. "I would like to inspire children to go into sports and, if I manage to do so, it will be my greatest success."

The most successful managers, directors and company owners should think about their successors on time. It is often that the greatest minds realize quickly that long-term success requires associates they can rely on at any time, as well as the next generation of leaders that will follow in their footsteps.

4. “When I was 14 or 15, I gave up on basketball and turned to horse-breeding. I didn’t train for six or seven months. I didn’t feel I should go and my father didn’t force me. After those six months passed, I simply went to play basketball because I wanted to do so.”

Although most jobs today require the ability to work under pressure, it is not rare that the best results and the most creative ideas come from an entirely different environment, spontaneously and without a plan. Employees often achieve the best results when their bosses allow them to implement an idea that is “outside the box”.

5. “We want to make a decent stable for 20 horses, where we would breed them, and there should also be side facilities there. It will be an investment of around EUR 1 million in the reconstruction of the hippodrome in Sombor.”

Social responsibility is an integral part of companies’ operations today. Just like Nikola Jokic, following his success in the NBA, did not forget his birthplace or his favorite hobby, companies shouldn’t forget the environment they work in or the well-being of the society they belong to.

6. “Scoring a point makes you happy, whereas passing the ball makes your fellow player happy. So, passing the ball makes two people happy.”

Team work has remained crucial in life and business. Being ready to cooperate and working in a way that makes you and your colleagues happy is guaranteed to bring you success.

7. “I believe that the only muscles you need in basketball are in the brain.”

New ideas and creative solutions have always been highly valued in the business world and now, more than ever, it is apparent that the brains are more important than the brawn. In the era of new technologies, when events succeed each other at a rapid pace, companies which stop growing for a while through new ideas and creativity fail very quickly.

8. “A victory in November is equally as important as a victory in May next year.”

Long-term planning is as important as daily goals and their realization.

9. “Winning is in fact very fun.”

Nikola Jokic once said that he would no longer play basketball once he found it was no longer fun for him. It’s similar in business, where success is much more likely when you’re doing a job that you like and that fulfills you.

10. “I am in fact an ordinary man.”

Successful people, creative and innovative people, are in fact “one of us”. They are not much different from ordinary people, but what does set them apart is that they express their ideas publicly and that they try to make their dreams come true.
