The Belgrade-based recycling company Eko Unija SN is planning substantial investments in this and the next two years, despite the difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Although they currently operate at an 80% capacity, they are to build a foundry and a facility for the processing of municipal waste into synthetic gas.

The core activity of the company, which was founded eight years ago, is the collection, sorting, cutting, compression and trade of non-hazardous waste, and in 2017 they added disassembly and demolition of facilities and equipment to their offer.

– We thereby secured the process of preparation of materials for recycling, which makes us unique among the known recyclers in Serbia. In the past two years, we have been orienting primarily to iron and steel waste and other waste materials with iron as the main component – they say for eKapija and add that this integral service shortens the logistics process of the alienation of accrued waste, which is a considerable benefit for big waste generators.

This year, the company points out, a possibility has opened for the development of a recycling center which will not only collect and prepare and store goods until they are sent away to be treated, but also treat them, that is, fully recycle those goods.

– The idea of Eko Unija SN is for the opening of the foundry to fully close the circle of the flow of secondary goods, from waste generators, through collectors, to recyclers, so that the secondary materials would be finalized into a finished product through the foundry – says the company, which has also been supported in this project, worth 200 to 250 million dinars, by the Development Fund.

The aim, they say, is for the production of ingots and casts from non-ferrous metals, as well as alloys for the power sector and the automotive industry of Serbia to be done in the first phase.

– We are negotiating with German companies which are opening industrial facilities in Serbia, and our role would be that of the supplier of the components the industry needs. The planned capacity of the foundry is 2,500-3,000 tons a year, and the opening of the foundry will also lead to the employment of 50 new workers – they say for eKapija.

They expect the production process at Eko Unija SN to begin in late 2021 or early 2022 and more investments are to follow.

– Next year, we are starting a project which offers a sustainable solution for management of the growing piles of waste. It will be a facility realized in cooperation with local self-governments, which will process municipal waste using the UHTH technology, which turns large quantities of low-quality materials (waste) into a high-quality product (synthetic gas). The technology fully complies with environmental laws and offers a solution which is in line with the “zero waste” principle of the future. A pilot facility has been set up in Switzerland and has gone through the testing – Eko Unija SN reveals.

They add that the facility, whose construction is expected in late 2022, will process 8,000 tons of waste a year.
