As stated on the website, the tunnel is around 3.3 kilometers long on the section of the international railway Corridor 10, and the value of the contract is EUR 40.8 million. The anticipated deadline for the design and construction of the tunnel is 912 days, i.e. roughly two and a half years from the introduction of the contractor to the work, and it is expected that the works on the construction site will start in the middle of 2022.
This way, the modernization of the Belgrade-Nis railroad, on the international railway Corridor 10 through Serbia, begins.
On behalf of the project's investor, Serbian Railways Infrastructure, the contract was signed by General Manager Nebojsa Surlan, and in addition to the contractor, other companies are involved, namely; N-ING Belgrade, Extra - Auto Transport Vrbas, Faculty of Technical Sciences Novi Sad, MC Transport design and simulation Belgrade, China Railway design corporation Serbia - Belgrade Branch and Makspro Zemun.
The contract was signed after the completed public procurement procedure, announced on October 30, 2021, and after the conducted tender procedures.
In addition to this tunnel, the contract also covers the construction of three evacuation tunnels with a total length of about 1.4 kilometers, as well as two access roads with a total length of around 1.7 kilometers.
Works will also be carried out on the reconstruction and modernization of the existing railway, the construction of the second track on the section Stalac - Djunis, and four additional tunnels through the gorge (tunnels number 1, 2, 3 and 5). Tenders for this second lot of the project are expected to occur in mid-2022.
The existing railway Stalac - Djunis is nearly 17.7 kilometers long and is the only single-track section on the part of the international railway Corridor 10 between Belgrade and Nis. Today, an average of 35-40 passenger and freight trains run on this line.
Once the entire project is completed, the new two-track railway Stalac - Djunis will allow for train speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, whereas currently, the trains between Stalac and Braljina go at 65 km / h, and the tracks at the railway station Stalac have last been renovated over half a century ago.
