Over the past few weeks, Agrokor's owner Ivica Todoric has been trying to find buyers who would temporarily acquire a 38-percent stake in Mercator and later sell it back to Todoric, the Ljubljana daily Dnevnik reported Monday citing the "unofficial information" from an unnamed source.
Agrokor's stake in the Slovenian retailer would not be put up for sale directly by Agrokor, but by Agrokor Investments, Todoric's company headquartered in the Netherlands, and it is expected to attract bids from banks and Croatian pension funds, the Slovenian daily underlined.
In that way, Agrokor would allegedly secure necessary financial support to pay off its debts, Dnevnik wrote.
Dnevnik claims that speculations that Agrokor's financial structure is questionable are now proving to be true because Agrokor will have to repay a third of Adris grupa's loan by the year's end, while a loan payment of EUR 50 million to French bank BNP Paribas Fortis is already due.
On the other hand, Croatian pension funds, which already helped Todoric in the past, are buying Mercator shares again, thus preventing the share value of that Slovenian retailer owned by Agrokor from dropping below EUR 70, Dnevnik reported.
