Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Zorana Mihajlovic and Belgrade Mayor Sinisa Mali today signed a Protocol of Cooperation on the construction of the first intermodal terminal with a logistics center, which will be situated in Batajnica, and announced that works would commence as early as next year, and the plan is to finish them in maximum two years.
The logistics center will occupy a total of 63 hectares, while the intermodal terminal, where rail and road traffic will intersect for the purpose of container transportation, will stretch over 13 hectares.
The intermodal terminal will be situated between the Batajnicka interchange on Corridor X and the Railway Station in Batajnica, and Serbian Construction, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Mihajlovic noted that the investment was valued at EUR 20 million, adding that it would be the first intermodal terminal not only in Serbia, but also in the entire western Balkans.
- There are 350 terminals in total in 20 countries of Europe, and there is no reason why Serbia should not have such a terminal because that will cut the costs of logistics which account for nearly 25% of overall expenditures in Serbia - Mihajlovic pointed out and added that the aim was to increase competitiveness and transportation of goods.
Mihajlovic said that the project would be financed with the proceeds of EU IPA grants for 2016/2017.
The capacity of the future intermodal terminal is 80,000 containers, and its construction will cut the share of logistics expenditures in overall costs to 10-12 percent, Mihajlovic underlined.
- Construction will take maximum two years - said Mihajlovic.
The Protocol of Cooperation was signed by Zorana Mihajlovic, Sinisa Mali and Branislav Popovic, the director of the Building Directorate of Belgrade.
