"Mercator" failed to sell "Intersport"
"Mercator" failed to sell sports clothes store
chain, "Intersport ISI".
Short-listed buyers for U "Intersport" were English
"SportsDirect", which has been present for years at the market of
Slovenia with ten shops, German branch office of "Intersport"
headquartered in Switzerland and Serbian "Triple". The last one is
owned by former Yugoslav recorder in triple jump and Olypmic Games player,
Milan Spasojevic, who distributes Converse brand shoes at the region of former
ex-Yu.
The highest non-obliging offer for "Intersport", in line with unofficial information was submitted by "SportsDirect" owned by a billionaire Mike Ashley. He was ready to set aside EUR 45 m for "Intersport" and negotiations have lasted for a few months.
On the other hand, "Agrokor" owned by Ivica Todoric, wanted to get more than EUR 50 m through the sale of retail chain of sports equipment. These expectations for are unacceptable for "SportsDirect". At the same time, takeover of Intersport larger shops was interesting for "SportsDirect".
Out of 85 shops, "Intersport" in Slovenia, in line with the latest publicly available data (as stated in the report of "Mercator Group" for Q1 this year), controls 34. They occupy more than 40.000 m2. A few franchise shops in Kosovo, Albania and Macedonia should be listed as well.
Potential takeover of "Intersport" would mean that SportsDirect, one of the biggest European sports equipment traders, with 700 shops, would conquer ex Yu market immediately.
