The world's two largest beer makers may soon team up given that Anheuser-Busch InBev, the owner of beer brands Budweiser and Beck's, has made a takeover bid for SABMiller, the owner of beer brands Miller and Miller Genuine Draft and Grolsch.
Although the details of this takeover bid have not been revealed, the value of SABMiller shares soared 22% after the news was announced, which indicates that investors expect the company to be valued at about USD 90 billion in the agreement. AB InBev shares gained seven percent in value in the same period.
The new company would have a market value of about USD 275 million, and it would be the largest beer maker in the world by far, which is why authorities in some countries may react since the agreement can kill the competition and bring about an increase in beer prices.
SABMiller became the world's second largest beer maker in 2002, when South African Breweries took over Miller Brewing with the headquarters in the USA. This London-based company has announced it will take the proposal in consideration.
AB InBev was established 2009, when the Brazilian-Belgian company InBev acquired the U.S. brewer Anheuser Busch.
