The only humus producer in Serbia - DTD Ribarstvo doubles production and is planning export to Russia

Backi jarak-based DTD Ribarstvo, a leading distributor of fish and fish products which is known at the market for “rubella” brand, is at the same time a location where the first and for now the only plant of humus in Serbia is.

As Marijana Ignjatovic, a technologist for humus says for eKapija, production capacity of plant food department which operates in humus production is on the average 1t of pack of 250g or 1,5 t of pack of 50 g per day.

- In 2016, we are planning to hire new staff since increase in production of 50% is expected. Demand for humus has been in constant increase, both at our and foreign markets, including EU.

In 2015, Backi Jarak-based plant generated more than double better results compared to previous year. The reason is, Ignjatovic explains, is the fact that product is recognized as very interesting for all big customers and fits into healthy concept food.

At the moment, DTD Ribarstvo is exporting its production to Croatia and Macedonia and during this year they are planning to expand placement to all other markets of ex-Yugoslavia and Russia.

- Plans are ambitious as always and developed in the way that we always offer something new to the offer. Market in product categories where we operate in has not been sufficiently developed yet and it is a chance we see for further development – Branislav Obradovic, Sales Manager at DTD Ribarstvo outlines.

He added that current business year will definitely be difficult due to decreasing shopping power but successful business of Serbian humus plant will be ensured with quality, innovation and acceptable price of product range.

For years, DTD Ribarstvo operates in healthy food segment and is known for production i.e. breeding of fish and fish products as well as production concept “from field to table”.

- When the company owner decided to start humus production, he traveled to this middle east country and got original receipt from a chef from Lebanon humus bar which we later on adapted and used in Serbia - Ljiljana Popadic, PR at DTD Ribarstvo, says for eKapija.


"Ribella" humus is at the moment available in seven different tastes and in 2016 it is planned to expand product range to two new aromas.

What is humus?

Humus is a spread of very rich and specific taste where lemon and onion dominate and despite its exotic origin, this nutrition does not differ from tastes we got used to.


- We produce humus by using four basic ingredients. The technological process is based on cooking of chick pea and their unification with other ingredients and spices and after that pasteurization and cooling come - Ina Mioc, head technologist at DTD Ribarstvo says.

As she explains, people recognized humus can be used very simply, only as a spread, as a replacement for some high caloric spreads or with pieces of raw vegetable.
