Rehabilitation of Avala’s tower starts, works to cost over €5m, new tower to look like old one
Rehabilitation of Avala’s tower will start today. The tower was torn dow during NATO bombing in 1999, on April 26 at 10.45 PM.
After the promises made by the officials, initiatives of the Association of Fans of Avala’s Tower and movements led by workers of RTS, former symbol of the city will be erected once again. The experts announce that the construction will cost over €5m. The tower will have the identical looks as the old one, moreover, it will be designed according to the original project more than 40 years old.
The history of the tower is the long one. It was architectural miracle for decades and it was placed among five the most beautiful TV relay towers in the world. It was built in 1965 and its height was 202.87 m. It was also one of the most significant pieces of Serbian architecture. Uroš Bogunović and Slobodan Janjić drew the plans for it. Workers of companies "Janko Lisjak" and "Rad" built it. They managed to put 4,000 tons of concrete to three "feet" that were buried in the ground to the depth of only 1.5m!
Half of Šumadija could have been seen from the Tower. There was also luxurious restaurant built 132 meters above the ground.
