Missing Rembrandt painting found

The Fainted Patient or The Smell (oil on canvas, 21.6x17.8cm) was painted by Rembrandt when he was 18 or 19.

Smell is one of five paintings depicting the five senses. It shows someone helping a patient regain consciousness by helping him sniff a cloth of ammonia. Rembrandt signed this painting with RHF, which was his earliest signature, and the initials stand for Rembrandt Harmenz Fecit.

The painting was discovered in the US state of New Jersey when a private collector brought it to an auction.

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) is one of the most important Baroque painters. Among his most famous works are The Night Watch, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, The Jewish Bride, The Descent from the Cross, Anna and the Blind Tobit, The Woman Taken in Adultery, as well as 36 self-portraits.
