Intesa the most successful bank in Serbia – Mild recovery of the entire banking sector in 2015
The first place among the five largest banks in Serbia based on total assets in 2015, according to the data by the National Bank of Serbia, belongs to Banca Intesa, with a 16% participation in total assets, followed by Komercijalna Banka, UniCredit Bank, Raiffeisen Bank and Societe Generale Bank. Intesa is in the first place based on absolute income, with the gross income of over RSD 8.5 billion in 2015, and among the first five based on profitability are also UniCredit Bank, Raiffeisen Bank, AIK Bank and Eurobank in that order.
- Although the liquidity of the banking sector at the end of 2015 was higher by 8.2% relative to the end of 2014, the total value of loans was 1,658.8 billion, which is marginally higher relative to the beginning of the year, stated financial analyst Nenad Gujanicic.
The capital of the banking sector increased by 0.7% to RSD 619 billion, whereas the assets increased by 2.9% and reached RSD 1,047.8 billion at the end of 2015. In the previous year, the banking sector continued to slowly consolidate, as the first 10 banks based on assets made up 77% of the total assets, which made it increasingly difficult for smaller banks to survive in the market.
The biggest change in balances was caused by the interest rate policy, whereas the biggest burden to the balances in the last year were write-offs and coverage of non-performing loans, whereas financial depreciation expenses amounted to RSD 60.2 billion.
- The final result of the banking sector in the amount of 7.5 billion was 3.2 times better relative to 2014, but when viewed from the aspect of return on assets, it is clear that the profitability is rather low – concluded Gujanicic and added that “although certain, mostly bigger, players in the market recorded solid results, the return in assets of the entire banking sector was a meager 1.2%”.
