As the website of the City of Belgrade reports, Mayor Sinisa Mali has said that this could be a great opportunity for the promotion of Serbian culture, literature and tradition and also an opportunity for attracting more tourists to come and meet Belgrade and Serbia.
The application has been jointly prepared and submitted by the City, the National Library of Serbia, the University Library “Svetozar Markovic” and the Belgrade City Library.
The World Book Capital is a title given by UNESCO since 2001 to cities as an acknowledgment of the quality of a proposed program for the development of reading habits, the improvement of the status of books and the promotion of positive elements of the entire book-related system, from the writer to the reader.
The status of the World Book Capital means that the city selected carries the title throughout the year, stands at the center of attention of international reading public, international and national associations of publishers, book-sellers and writers and that it takes a position from which it can promote its literature, culture and tradition and attract a large number of visitors to cultural events, festivals and science seminars.
Letters of support to Belgrade in this endeavor have been sent by head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Michael Davenport, the Embassy of the USA, Goethe Institute...
