The German car component producer Leoni, which has a factory in Serbia, has been swindled of millions, reports the German weekly Focus. In total, the so far unknown perpetrators have stolen EUR 40 million from the company's account.

Using forged documents and false identities, they have transferred the company's money to foreign accounts through electronic communication channels, the company reported. The company's spokesman didn't wish to reveal further details due to the ongoing investigation.

Sources close to the company's top inform that the suspect assumed a false identity of a Leoni associate “with important findings” which enabled him to prepare special business activities. The truly interesting aspect of the story is not the manner in which the transfer was prepared, but the amount of money stolen.

The company's liquidity has not been significantly damaged, but the value of the company's shares has dropped by 5%.
