Cacak Fruit Research Institute in Kazakh market

A memorandum of cooperation between the Cacak Fruit Research Institute and representatives of the Government of Kazakhstan was signed at the institution and pertains to transfer of knowledge and technologies of growing fruit in this country using Serbian seedlings.

The director of the Institute, Milan Lukic, said that the signing of the agreement was a confirmation of the quality and the expertise of the institution and added that the memorandum envisioned the founding of a similar institute in Kazakhstan and that Serbian experts would work on transferring knowledge and technologies.

– In line with the memorandum, the Fruit Research Institute will make great efforts to contribute to the development of scientific institutions in the Republic of Kazakhstan, the training of their workforce to the end of establishing new orchards, implementation of planting material and the complete technology for modern fruit growing – Lukic said and added that the management's goal, in addition to scientific and research work, was to increasingly focus on foreign markets.

Yerkhat Iskaliyev, logistics director at the Kazakh Sovereign Wealth Fund Samruk Kazyna, says that the country has been investing a lot in agriculture in the past few years, but that the import of seedlings from Italy and Poland hasn't produced expected results, especially when it comes to apples, raspberries and blackberries, which is why the decision has been made to cooperate with Serbia and the Fruit Research Institute.

– This is the first step towards the cooperation. Kazakhstan now has a well developed agricultural system, especially in farming. Our plan is to become a large producer of apples, raspberries and blackberries and to export them to Russia, China and even Europe. As the European Union has stopped trading with Russia, Kazakhstan has been given a great opportunity to export its fruit to the Russian Federation and we will take it. Merely importing seedlings from Serbia is not the solution. We need to establish an institute in Kazakhstan. We were importing fruit seedlings from Italy and Poland and what usually happened was that the trees were very developed, but that yields were negligible, a few fruits only. We would then get explanations that it was due to the soil composition or the unfavorable climate. This is why we have to form a similar institute in Kazakhstan – Iskaliyev said.
