Bluetooth got its name from the nickname of the Viking King Harald “Blåtand” Gormsson, states the website of Ericsson, the company responsible for the technology. Harald ruled Norway and Denmark in the 10th century, and he was famous for promoting communication between the two countries.

Just as king Harald united Norway and Denmark, Bluetooth connects devices.

His nickname, “Bluetooth”, dates back to certain chronicles from 1140, and it is assumed that he got it due to a bad tooth, which appeared “blue”, or dark.

Another theory says that he wore expensive blue clothes emphasizing his royal origins. There are several more theories, none of which have been proven. The only certain thing is that the nickname has remained.

The Bluetooth logo is a combination of two runes representing the initials of his name.
