The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has been organizing concerts on the first day of the New Year for decades, presenting to the audience a program consisting of the rich repertoire of the Strauss family and their contemporaries. The New Year's Concerts have also become popular outside of Vienna and even outside the Austrian borders. They are broadcast in 90 countries and have 50 million viewers.
At the concert on January 1, 2017, the orchestra will be conducted by Gustavo Dudamel of Venezuela. Born in 1981 in Barquisimeto, Dudamel is the youngest conductor in the history of New Year's Concerts. The program will include works by Johann Strauss, sen. and Johann Strauss, Jr, Josef Strauss, Franz Lehar, Emile Waldteufel, Franz von Suppe, Carl Michael Ziehrer and Otto Nicolai.
Due to high demand, tickets can be bought exclusively through the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's website. The application for tickets for the 2017/18 concert lasts from January 2 till February 28, 2017. The prices of tickets for the New Year's Concert range from EUR 35 to EUR 1,090.
The first New Year's Concert was held on December 31, 1939, conducted by Clemens Krauss. The next one was organized on January 1, 1941. During the period of the war and the dictatorship, many saw the concert as a true Viennese celebration. Nowadays, the Philharmonic aims to provide joy and optimism to the audience through the music performed, but also to send a message of hope, friendship and peace throughout the world.
