Highest earning movies in 2016

Captain America: Civil War is the most watched movie in cinemas throughout the world in 2016. This Marvel movie earned USD 1.153 billion at the box office.

In the USA alone, Captain America: Civil War, which continues where Avengers: Age of Ultron ended, earned USD 408 million, making it the second most watched movie in the country. The makers of this movie can also thank the Chinese audience for their success, as the movie made more than USD 190 million there.

Animated features Finding Dory and Zootopia also earned more than a billion dollars each.

The fact that children and their parents were the most active movie-goers in 2016 is also shown by the fact that The Jungle Book and The Secret Life of Pets are among the five most watched movies. Along with animated movies, comic book adaptations earned the most money for Hollywood studios in 2016 as well. The list of the highest grossing movies includes Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Deadpool, Suicide Squad and Doctor Strange.

It’s interesting that two of these four features have made the critics’ worst movies lists for 2016.

Nevertheless, the most interesting title placed 11th. Rogue One, the first Star Wars movie not directly linked to the Luke Skywalker arc, earned USD 555 million and is among the top ten most viewed movies in America in 2016.

The list also shows that Disney was the most successful studio in 2016. It earned more than USD 7 billion on movies shown in cinemas alone. This is the first time in history that a film studio has earned so much.
