The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) invested in 378 projects in the amount of EUR 9.4 billion last year, exceeding the 2015 record. EBRD, as stated, continued to strongly support the region through engagements in programs aiding the modernization of economies and contributing to making them stronger and more resilient.

The countries in which EBRD invested the most in the past year include Turkey, Kazakhstan, Egypt, Poland and Bulgaria.

In 2016, EBRD increased investments in projects in the local currency to 93, compared to 80 a year before, the bank said.

Furthermore, EBRD maintained a high level of investments in small business, which is considered crucial to economic development and creation of new jobs.

At the same time, the number of projects in which EBRD invested in the countries which had advanced the least in the transition increased to 114 from 102 in 2015.

As part of the transition towards a “green” economy, the share of ecological investments of EBRD increased to 33% of the total yearly investments from 31% in 2015.

Last year, EBRD also increased its involvement in the projects supposed to contribute to a greater gender equality to 29 from 23 projects in 2015.
