A turnover of around EUR 5 billion is realized annually in 14 free zones in Serbia, of which around EUR 2.5 billion is exported from free zones, stated the president of the Free Zone Group and the director of Pirot Free Zone, Dragan Kostic.

Kostic said at the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia (CCIS) that the data shows that the development of free zones is booming in Serbia and that we should start thinking how to maintain and enhance it. As he reminded, the Free Zone Group brings together 14 free zones operating in Serbia, namely Pirot, Zrenjanin, Subotica, Novi Sad, Sabac, Uzice, Smederevo, Krusevac, Svilajnac, Apatin, Vranje, Priboj, Belgrade and Kragujevac's FAS Free Zone.

According to Kostic, further activities will be considered, especially in the light of the new customs law and Serbia's preparation to enter EU.

– The point is that we need to be competitive with free zones in the neighborhood. I'm referring to free zones in Macedonia and Turkey above all, which are currently providing better advantages than us – Kostic said.

He said that the Group would define its position regarding what needs to be negotiated about with the legislative and executive authorities in order to enhance the operations of free zones in Serbia. According to Kostic, the CCIS will work much harder in the coming period on connecting local free zones with the World Free Zone Association, but also with other free zones, in order to draw as many investments in free zones in Serbia as possible.

The main idea of the concept of free zones is to secure the most favorable conditions for doing business to the end of attracting direct investments, implementing new technologies, increasing export and employment. Unlike direct state subsidies for creating new jobs, investors in free zones use incentives before they begin operating.

There was talk at the conference about the possibility of the Free Zone Group of Serbia's candidacy for hosting and organizing the world free zone conference with the World Free Zone Organization in May 2019.
