The first plane of the Swiss airline Germania takes off from Nis on Friday, June 23, at 4:45 pm. The destination is Zurich, where the passengers will be flying from the Constantine the Great Airport twice a week, Mondays and Fridays.

As the Swiss company emphasizes, Germania specializes in flights to unusual destinations and the new route therefore fits well in their growing portfolio.

– There is a large Serbian community in Switzerland with a strong demand for regular flights to their homeland. We expect a loyal community who is looking forward to regularly visiting their families and friends in their homeland – Chief Commercial Officer of Germania Flug AG Urs A. Pelizzoni says for eKapija.

The fact that the tickets are being sold is confirmed for our portal by the Belgrade office of Intertravel GSA as well. This agency is a member of the Swiss Putnik Group and the general sales representative of Germania.

– The sales are good, there are plenty interested people and most of the requests are coming from Switzerland for the time being – they point out.

In addition to the Serbian community in Switzerland, the airline is also counting on an increase of the tourist potential in the region.

– Due to the local hospitality as well as the cultural and natural sights, we reckon with a certain share of leisure travel – Pelizzoni says.

Flights on the Nis-Zurich route will be made by Airbus A319, with 150 seats. The least expensive single-direction tickets stand at EUR 69, whereas return tickets cost CHF 150.

Germania will however, face strong competition from another Swiss airline – the national company SWISS, which is establishing regular flights on this route. SWISS will initiate the line on April 2, with flights planned for Fridays and Sundays.

Pelizzoni highlights a very good price-performance ratio as Germania's biggest advantage.

– Our fares include all services, 20 kg free baggage, service on board with non-alcoholic drinks and a snack as well as all taxes. This allows our customers to travel without problems and without any unforeseen costs.

(Urs A. Pelizzoni) When asked what the company's further plans for the Serbian market are, our interviewee answers:

– We are looking forward to a strong partnership with Putnik Group and we are ready to develop this new route in several ways. This includes, for example, the possibility for Serbian travelers to transit at Zurich Airport and to reach other Germania destinations at reasonable prices.

Germania Flug AG was founded in August 2014 as an independent Swiss airline headquartered in Glattbrugg, the Swiss canton of Zurich. It carries out its transportation activities in close cooperation with the German company Germania Fluggesellschaft mbH, founded 30 years ago, and its fleet includes two Airbus A319 planes with 150 seats and one Airbus A321 with 215 seats.

Requirements met

The Swiss airline doesn't reveal much about the negotiation process and the technical requirements that the Constantine the Great Airport needed to meet in order for the cooperation to be realized. They only point out that “from an operational point of view, the airport fulfills all of Germania’s requirements”.

– Unfortunately, we cannot comment our negotiations. But Germania is highly specialized in developing flights to ethnic destinations like Nis and we were able to benefit from a good and professional cooperation with all authorities – Palizzoni emphasizes.

An eight-year break

Zurich is one of the most demanded destinations from Nis. As recently reported by the Nis Airport, traffic towards this destination has been initiated several times over the past 30 years, most frequently between 2004 and 2006, when Jat Airways and Montenegro Airlines flew to Zurich. Jat maintained the line until 2009.

Germania and SWISS are to revive the Nis-Zurich route after 8 years.
