The Nis Constantine the Great Airport is recording a constant growth of the number of passengers and expect to have more than 300,000 of them in 2017.

– We ended last year with 125,000 passengers transported, and there were more than 20,000 in January alone. We are very pleased with this number and it gives us hope that we will have more than 300,000 passengers this year – Vladica Djurdjanovic, director of the Nis Airport, said for Tanjug.

The passengers mostly come for south and southeast Serbia, Kosovo and Metohija, but also from throughout the country thanks to inexpensive tickets and low airport taxes.

– We now have nine passenger transport routes and one cargo route to Istanbul. The tenth route is being established in April to Zurich by the Swiss airline, and by Germania in July – he said.

The tickets, as he says, have been available through the websites of these airlines' and tourist agencies.

Djurdjanovic sees low taxes of only three euros as one of the reasons for the airport's success, and he also points out that there are no subsidized flights and airlines, as the contracts with low-cost companies have been signed on a commercial basis. He says that this doesn't only pertain to low-cost companies, but that the prices are the same for all companies and that they all fly under the same conditions.

He, however isn't satisfied with the number of employees, as there are only 90 of them, the same number as when there were no passengers at the airport.

– This year, we need to drastically increase the number of workers in order to meet all the regulation, or we will find ourselves short-staffed. The current amount of traffic requires at least 150 workers – he explains.

Aside from increasing the number of employees, the plan is to upgrade the equipment and X-ray devices, and the reconstruction of the terminal building, more precisely, an extension by 2,500 square meters, has been planned for 2018.
