New invitation for construction of Regional Waste Management Center Keles in June – Investment worth around EUR 40 million

Municipal waste recycling companies will be invited again to apply for the construction of the Regional Waste Management Center Keles in Nis.

The director of the Regional Development Agency “South”, Bojan Avramovic, says that the first attempt at finding a concessionaire for the construction of Keles failed as the consortium which had applied had failed to provide a valid banking guarantee, whereas nobody responded to the second invitation.

Avramovic said that the second invitation had taken place during last year's parliamentary election and that there had been no bids.

– The investments is worth around EUR 40 million and political stability is something investors find very important. For this reason, we didn't want to place a new invitation to investors during the presidential election – he emphasized.

According to Avramovic, foreign companies are interested in building Keles, but are reluctant because of the price of EUR 40 per ton of treated waste, defined by the contract.

– If the waste treatment fee were EUR 100 per ton, we would find a concessionaire very easily, but the price would more than double the waste collection bills, which we find unacceptable – Avramovic said.

According to the initial announcements, the construction of Keles was supposed to begin in early 2016.

The regional center would solve the problem of waste disposal in the areas of Nis, Sokobanja, Gadzin Han, Merosina, Aleksinac, Svrljig and Razanj.
