A donation of EUR 2.65 million set aside by the People’s Republic of China for Montenegro will enable the reconstruction of the Djurdjevica Tara Bridge. A part of the funds is meant for the reconstruction, whereas the remaining part is to be used for other planned projects.

The Government of Montenegro confirmed this at the session in which the Information about the Donation was adopted and in which the Agreement on the economic and technical cooperation between the two countries was signed.

– The donation of around EUR 2.65 million will be used for other infrastructural projects as well, for which agreements will be signed in due time – the Information says.

The agreement also defines that the China Development Bank and a competent institution chosen by the Government of Montenegro are to mutually open a non-interest, non-expenditure account. The utilization of the donation will be subject to the rules of the China Development Bank.

Not a lot has been invested in the bridge so far, and its reconstruction is necessary and cannot be delayed. Aside from its main purpose, the bridge is a significant tourist attraction and one of the most beautiful structures of its kind in the world.

However, the concrete fence has been deteriorating for some time, and the concrete is so damaged in spots that the reinforcement is showing through.

Urgent works

Last year, the Directorate of Transportation of Montenegro announced that the works on the bridge would be nominated for the Public Procurement Plan for 2017. It was noted back then that the works couldn’t be delayed by too much, both for the technical state of the bridge and the tourist effects and the benefits thereof.
