The European Court of Justice made a verdict banns products of plant origin to be sold under the label "milk", "butter" or "cheese". On Wednesday (June 14, 2017), the European Court of Justice issued a verdict which a verdict banns products of plant origin to be sold under the label "milk", "butter" or "cheese", British service BBC reports.
The judgment states that the terms "milk", "butter", "cream cheese" and "yogurt" can only be used for advertising of products that are derived from animal milk, unless expressly provided for exceptions, which is not the case with soy or tofu.
The imposed ban applies in cases where these terms are supplemented by clarifying or descriptive additions suggestive of vegetable origin of a product, such as "herb cheese", "veggie cheese", "cream". Such a court judgment was made in the process initiated by a German association for the fight against unfair competition against TofuTown, the company which produces and distributes vegetarian and vegan food, called "soyatoo butter tofu", "herb cheese" and the like.

The court in the German city of Trier, before which the case was brought, requested the opinion of the European Court of Justice.
