Minister of Agriculture Branislav Nedimovic said that the commission in Zrenjanin had authorized the lease, but that the decision needed to be verified by the Town Assembly as well.
– Tonnies had indeed applied for the lease of state land in Zrenjanin and the commission gave a positive response. Nevertheless, the decision now needs to be put before the Town Assembly, which needs to verify it – Nedimovic said.
The newspaper says that the lease of land in Zrenjanin is only one of the five requests of the renowned German investor submitted for the purpose of acquiring 10,000 hectares of arable land in Serbia needed for pig farming and development of meat packing industry, in which the company plans to invest EUR 300 million.
As stated, the lease of the first hectares is a good sign that the investments are likely to take place and that Tonnies has not given up on investing in Serbia. If all requests are approved, it is likely that it will become one of the top five land owners in Serbia.
The Blic source from the Government claims that this decision opens the door for a big investment in Serbia, which might become an important country in the field of pig farming and pork processing in Europe in the coming years.
The newspaper’s source says that Zrenjanin is the first location approved and able to meet Tonnies’ standards, but adds that it is likely that the remaining four local self-governments it has applied with will reach decisions on the lease of state land in the upcoming days.
I believe that it is almost certain that Kikinda will do so next week, as it is also in the final stages of approving the lease of around 3,000 hectares of arable land for the next 30 years to Tonnies – he adds.
He also says that the terms and the schedule of the first phase of investments in Serbia, which entails the feeding of around 700,000 pigs, as well as meat processing, should be made concrete by the end of the year, and that the number of pigs should reach four million in the upcoming years.
