One of the things people rarely take on a trip is a hairdryer, which is a great mistake, the Independent writes.

The study carried out in 2008 by microbiologist Chuck Gerba showed that hairdryers in hotels are the last item anyone would want to use, as they contain numerous bacteria.

By carefully examining the cleanliness of items in nine L.A. hotels, Gerba discovered that hairdryers are among the dirtiest items, as hotel staff is not obliged to clean them. This might also be true of door-handles, light-switches etc.

Other items to pay attention to are keys, remote-controls, menus etc.

Regardless of the level of cleanness, Gerba found at least one spot in each room containing fecal coliform and MRSA which can cause serious skin infections.
