The fair will be opened by Karl-Markus Gauss, one of the most prominent contemporary essayists and critics from Austria. His roots lie in Vojvodina, more precisely, in Futog, from where his parents moved, following WW2, to Salzburg, where Gauss was born. He graduated from the University of Salzburg (German History and Philology) and continues to live in the city. Since 1991, Gauss has been editor in chief of Literatur und Kritik (Literature and Critical Reviews), and, in 2006, he became a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry. He specializes in writing about national minorities, some of which were previously unknown to many of his readers. Furthermore, he often writes about eastern European countries, which he has visited on several occasions. He also strives to promote writers from those areas, who are relatively unknown to German readers.
He has won the Award of the Austrian Book Sellers for Tolerant Thinking and Acting, the European Essay Prize and the Award of the Austrian Ministry of Culture for publishing in the field of culture. During his stay in Belgrade, Gauss will take part in the European Alphabet conversation with Laszlo Vegel and Ivan Ivanji at the Belgrade Book Fair on October 24.
