Two revitalized generators at HPP Zvornik have been put into operation, and the facility’s power has thereby increased by nearly 15 MW. The project of the reconstruction of the generators was financed from the loan of the German development bank KfW and the investment is worth EUR 70 million, whereas the main contractor is the German company Voith Hydro, as said on the website of the Government of Serbia.

Minister of Mining and Energy Aleksandar Antic, who attended the commissioning of the modernized generators A1 and A2, said that such project increased the power of the electrical utility system and that HPP would have optimal operations for the next 40 years.

He added that the modernization of the energy sector would continue.

– Our plans are ambitious. In Djerdap, we are beginning to revitalize the fifth generator, we are continuing the works at the HPPs Zvornik and Bajina Basta, and we also have a range of plans for hydro power plants along the Morava and the Ibar – Antic said.

The acting director of EPS, Milorad Grcic, said that the company’s obligation was to maintain, enhance, build and modernize the electrical utility system, in order for Serbia to get closer to the EU regulations and stabilize its power production.

– This is an important day for our electrical utility system, as power in Serbia is mostly produced from the thermal sector, although the production from the hydro sector is far more cost effective and is a form of green energy – Grcic pointed out.

He added that the production capacity of HPP Zvornik had increased by 15% and that the plan was to complete the modernization of all four power generators before the end of 2019, increasing the total power by 30%.

The revitalized generators A1 and A2 produced 2,619 MWh on the first day of the test run, December 12, 2017, thereby breaking the all-time record at the hydro power plant, which was put into operation 63 years ago.

The reconstruction of the third generator began on January 10, 2018, and it is expected that the total production of power, after the modernization of HPP Zvornik, would amount to around 70 million kWh a year.

The partners of Voith Hydro on the project are, among others, Elektromontaza, ELNOS, the Mihajlo Pupin Institute and the Nikola Tesla Institute.
