Electric Power Company of Serbia to become Internet operator
Electric Power Company of Serbia (EPS) plans to start
providing Internet services prior to the end of year 2011.
EPS is building a
network that the enterprises require in order to be able to run the energy
system of Serbia. The capacity of the network is big enough for commercial use,
and that system will be of sufficient quality for the Internet market in Serbia
in two or three years.
- Realization of the telecommunication project is underway and it already
lasts for few years. That project should enable modern and secure communication
for the needs of Electric Power Company of Serbia, "Elektromreže Srbije", the
Transfer System Operator and the Electricity Market Operator - people in
EPS explained.
- Commercial use of this system is now impossible, but it is likely that the situation will be completely different in few years - said the collocutor of Beta, but he did not specify whether that company applied for the license to connect with the international networks in order to offer Internet services.
The licenses are issued by the Republic Telecommunication Agency, and people in that agency say that they still don't want to reveal the names of the companies that applied for the license.
