Kragujevac to get Russian digital navigation maps – City signs memorandum of understanding with Yandex

The Russian technological and IT company Yandex and the City of Kragujevac have signed the Memorandum of Understanding for the preparation of digital navigation maps for taxi and public transport, as well as for other transportation systems.

The memorandum was signed by Yandex platform solutions manager, Andrey Stelkov, and the mayor of Kragujevac, Radomir Nikolic.

Stelkov told the press that a detailed map of the city of Kragujevac would be prepared by the early summer of 2018 at the latest.

Nikolic told the press that Yandex was Google's counterpart in the East.

– Kragujevac is the first city in Serbia that Yandex has chosen and the first one in which everything Yandex' application system features will be implemented. This means that they will first map the City of Kragujevac, the traffic routes and the road infrastructure and mark the institutions in the city of Kragujevac. The system itself is very interesting for the citizens, as the users are able to update it and enter additional data – Nikolic explained.

He added that Yandex had a system of awarding the users who add the biggest amount of data to their maps.

Young people, high school and university students, as well as Yandex' cartographers, take part in entering the data, and the system checks the information and verifies it before integrating it into the maps.

He added that Yandex provided much more detailed maps than those available on Android phones.

– Yandex has applications such as Yandex Taxi, Yandex Public Transport and Yandex Parking and all this can be implemented here and be of use to not only the citizens, but to the city administration as well – Nikolic said.

Nikolic said that Yandex had chosen Kragujevac due to its ideal size for this kind of a project.
