If the idea of the Roads of Serbia gets implemented, toll collection might start on the main Serbian highways as well, Novosti learns. This, however, only pertains to heavy trucks, those above 12 tons. This scenario is part of the long-term and medium-term business strategy plan of this company for the next decade, up till 2027. The implementation of toll collection on IB state roads would first have to be approved by the competent ministry, Novosti reports.

In the first phase, the toll would be collected on the busiest highways. In the second phase, the toll would also be collected for trucks above 3.5 tons. The toll collection system has already been conceived.

– If such a decision is adopted, the toll collection system could easily expand to include toll collection of IB state roads, for those vehicle categories to which the decision pertains – says the strategy of the Roads of Serbia.

– Technologically, this would mean the expansion of electronic toll collection, which would be realized using the same equipment with which the ETC system was realized on highways, without toll booths. The Toll Collection Sector has designed a new system of toll collection on IB state roads for vehicles whose total weight exceeds 12 tons, that is, 3.5 tons in the second phase. The implementation of this system would first encompass IB state roads, which feature the biggest traffic frequency, and then others as well, successively, depending on the funds available.

Toll collectors expect this measure to primarily increase the revenues, but they also believe that the toll collection on these roads would reroute heavy vehicle traffic to highways, thereby increasing traffic safety.

The dynamics of the opening of new national toll booths depends on the construction of new roads. According to the strategy, Novosti writes, 22 new toll booths will open this year, 12 on the route from Nis to the Macedonian border, six from Nis to Bulgaria and four from Obrenovac to Pozega.

The plan of the Roads of Serbia is to expand the toll collection system in the future by implementing the option of payment through text messages and the usage of credit and debit cards of large transport operators or fuel suppliers. They are also planning to use the NFC (near-field communication) technology. This entails a contactless toll collection system, Novosti writes.
