Industrija Mesa Srem Sid (Meat Industry Srem Sid) got a new owner yesterday, who plans to process 400 head of livestock a day and export to Turkey, stated Minister of Agriculture Branislav Nedimovic.

The new owner of the company, which has been in bankruptcy since 2001, is the consortium of companies Agropapuk and Djurdjevic.

After 17 years and several unsuccessful attempts at a takeover of Srem Sid, production is expected to start in this former meat industry giant, which used to employ up to 2,000 people. At the end of 2017, the debt of Srem Sid amounted to RSD 577 million, and around 230 workers are still waiting for repayment of late salaries.

Nedimovic said that the reactivation of IM Srem Sid would enable the capacities for export to Turkey to be filled.

– The aim is to avoid situations such as being able to export two to three thousand tons, when we agreed on 5,000 tons. The Turkish side wants quotas to expand and we should agree on the increase – Nedimovic said.
