The Sava Square, the area in front of the Main Railway Station and the Nemanjina Street, will take its final shape through an urban-architectural contest which will open in a month, City Architect Milutin Folic confirmed for Politika, as reported by Beoinfo.

That is when the details that the planners will have to take into consideration will be made known, and the future semi-roundabout will feature a monument to the founder of the Serbian state, Stefan Nemanja, designed by Russian sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov, winner at the international contest for the construction of the said monument.

The reconstruction of the square will also initiate the reconstruction of the Savska Street and the section of the Karadjordjeva Street up to Branko's Bridge. This traffic route, featuring bicycle and pedestrian lanes and tree lines, will connect the Belgrade Waterfront with the center of the capital of Serbia.

– The new square will be similar to the Republic Square. The space between the Railway Station, which will probably be turned into a Serbian history museum, and the monument will not be crossed by the traffic route. The plaza will feature green areas, a fountain, benches... Vehicles will be redirected along the outskirts of the area, closer to the Saint Sava hospital – Folic explains and adds that this endeavor will be financed by the company Belgrade Waterfront.

The development of the traffic routes might begin as soon as the boulevard to be named after Woodrow Wilson is completed. It is being built within the Sava amphitheater as the main artery of the Belgrade Waterfront residential-office complex.

The boulevard, two kilometers long and 40 meters wide, with two lanes in both directions, will connect the Belgrade Fair and the Old Sava Bridge and will be completed this year, whereas the Railway Station closes on July 1, with all the traffic redirected to Prokop.

The monument to Stefan Nemanja on the Sava Square should be revealed in the first half of 2019, marking 800 years of the autocephaly of the Serbian Church.

– This stretch will connect the river coast with the city's center and enable the city and the river to meet – the city architect points out.
