Jorgovanka Tabakovic elected NBS governor

The National Assembly of Serbia has re-elected Jorgovanka Tabakovic the governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS), writes Beta, as reported by Politika.

Jorgovanka Tabakovic was elected with a 142 vote, with 6 MPs against the election, and no votes were withheld.

The MPs also appointed Zeljko Jovic vice governor, with 142 voting in favor of the election, two votes withheld and no votes against.

Serbia President Aleksandar Vucic had proposed to the National Assembly for Jorgovanka Tabakovic to perform the function of the governor of the National Bank of Serbia in another six-year mandate.

In his explanation, Vucic said that what recommended Tabakovic for the position were the results achieved, primarily in maintaining the macroeconomic stabilization in cooperation with the Government of Serbia and other competent institutions, along with a full coordination of the monetary and fiscal policy.

According to the recently adopted amendments to the Law on the NBS, central bank officials are elected by the end of the previous official’s mandate at the latest and no sooner than 120 days before the expiration of the mandate, in order for the continuity of the NBS’ operations to be secured.

Zeljko Jovic was born in 1979 in Sabac. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade in 2003. He completed his MA studies in 2010 and his PhD studies in 2017.

From 2004, he was employed at commercial banks, and since 2012, he has worked at the National Bank of Serbia as Deputy Director General of the Bank Supervision Department.

Jovic was previously Director of the Administration for Supervision of Financial Institutions, which was closed in line with the amendments to the Law on the NBS.
