Tire manufacturer Michelin is looking for a way of using wood chips in the production of tires instead of oil-derived ingredients.

The car tire industry is closely tied with the oil industry, as ingredients derived from oil are used in the production of tires. In the past years, car manufacturers have been increasingly turning to alternative driving systems, in order to create the prerequirements for moving away from using petroleum products as fuel.

Tire manufacturers, including one of the biggest among them, the French Michelin, are following in their footsteps. As motoring.com.au reports, the company intends to wean itself away from oil.

Currently, 80% of the materials in tires are coming from oil.

Michelin is working on creating elastomers from waste from the wood industry to replace the oil content in tires.

The French company hopes that it will be able to show its first tire made of wood in 2020.

The switch to wood has a range of benefits, from the reduced reliance on oil to lower production and transportation costs and local sourcing.

Michelin believes that this is an excellent solution for the future of the tire industry. The French producer is also developing a technology for the 3D printing of tires, for which the realistic timeframe is 10-15 years.
