Refurbishment of Trajan’s bridge - EU granted 181,000 EUR to Municipality of Kladovo for realization of project
Within the scope of Serbian-Romanian cross-border cooperation programme, European Union has granted 181,000 EUR to Municipality of Kladovo for realization of the project named Trajan’s Bridge – from the Past to the Future. Thanks to this project, the remnants of Trajan’s bridge and cestrum Pontes, five kilometers downstream from Kladovo, in village of Kostol, will begin to shine by the end of the year. European donors will provide 80% of the required funds, while the remaining 20% of funds for organization of space around the world-famous monument of culture from the Roman age will be provided by the local self-government.
- The first phase of realization of this project in the location of Pontes anticipates construction of necessary infrastructure, primarily access road to the remnants of Trajan’s bridge, construction of parking lot, installation of lighting system and appropriate tourist-informative signs. It is estimated that this project will increase number of tourists in Municipality of Kladovo by minimum 10% on annual basis – Project Manager Ivan Vržogić pointed out.
Project Trajan’s Bridge – from the Past to the Future has been elaborated in agreement with the Institute for Preservation of Monuments of Culture in Niš.
Trajan’s bridge near Kostol was built in 105 AD according to the idea of Apolodor, famous Syrian architect from Damask. This building miracle of the old century used to connect two banks of the Danube on 20 pillars, 1.1 km long.
