Belgrade is among 10 best alternative city breaks in Europe

With their historic architecture, beautiful scenery and culture without the crowds, these charming European cities are perfect for a late summer/early autumn getaway, the paper writes.
Guardian article says that Belgrade is the best-value destination for a city break. According to their estimates, the total cost for visiting the Serbian capital for two nights for two, including accommodation, food, drinks, sightseeing and city travel but excluding flights, amounts to GBP 149 which is around EUR 165. Guardian points out that that's 12% cheaper than Krakow.
Belgrade might not be Europe’s most beautiful city but it has a striking setting at the confluence of the Danube and the the Sava rivers, a few architectural gems and impressive monuments, and the best nightlife in the Balkans, Guardian assesses.
The article mentions that this summer National Museum has reopened and that it covers a huge range of Serbian history, from the Paleolithic period to 20th-century art . The article points out that the Museum is free on Sundays and closed on Mondays. Guardian adds that the Museum of Contemporary Art, reopened late last year, has free entry on Wednesdays while its closed on Tuesdays.
If the sun is shining, locals head to Ada Ciganlija, Belgrade’s “seaside”, the article says.
Guardian adds that this forested peninsula on the south bank of the Sava river has a string of sandy beaches, and activities such as hiking and kayaking and that it is worth crossing the river to the picturesque suburb of Zemun, a separate town until 1934, to wander its winding, cobblestoned streets.
Guardian also recommends restaurants to have dinner at and invites the visitors to Cetinjska Street where a group of bars and clubs are located.
The article also lists the following places as Europe's best alternative city breaks – Montenegrin Podgorica, Macedonian Ohrid, Croatian Pula, Catania and Bari in Italy, Kaunas in Lithuania, Košice in Slovakia, Preveza in Greece and Grenoble in France.
