Smart technologies are increasingly more present in our everyday life. It started with smartphones and TV sets, through solving the issues of power supply and traffic in big cities using smart infrastructure, to having unmanned, smart cars and trucks, safely traversing smart cities.
The minister without a portfolio in charge of innovations and technological development at the Government of Serbia recently announced that the innovation budget for 2019 also entailed a special budget for smart cities. In addition to large cities like Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nis, the budget will be available to small towns as well, for digitalization, becoming “smart” and providing their residents with better transport, healthcare, an easier access to documents...
The second Smart City Festival 2018, held in Belgrade, also dealt with the future of smart cities, and the award contest “I Have a Solution for a Smarter City”, where the most innovative ideas in this field will be selected, is open until November 25.
The development of intelligent infrastructure has been one of the leading topics in 2018. A state delegation of Serbia has thereby agreed cooperation with China in the field of smart cities through the Memorandum on the Informatics Silk Road, and Kragujevac signed a memorandum of understanding with the Russian IT company Yandex LLC back in February to the end of creating a Smart City area within its territory. Also, since January 2018, it has been possible to pay for public transport fares with Mastercard, which the company’s representatives have called one of the smartest technologies available.
Smaller companies, especially startups, are also developing smart solutions for smart cities. Solagro has developed smart recycling presses, and Strawberry energy has been installing its smart benches and phone chargers worldwide for years. There’s still room here for new “smart” products and services, which has made the IT sector one of the busiest and most demanded sectors in the past years.
Considering that Professor Nikola Rajakovic said back in 2016 that the perspective of implementing smart cities in Serbia was very favorable, eKapija has decided to look into the technologies which enable intelligent management of large settlements in its new Special Edition Newsletter.
The current projects in the fields of smart technologies, digitization and automation, the current state and the potentials for further development will be the topics of eKapija’s new Special Edition Newsletter “Smart Cities – Through Digital Transformation to New Business Opportunities”, to be published on November 27, 2018.
We will present the examples of good projects in this field, consider the perspective of smart cities in Serbia and the region and try to answer the question of when more urban areas will “get smart”. We will talk to all the relevant people in this field – from state institutions in charge of urban development, through companies developing smart infrastructure, to potential investors in such systems and digital transformation experts. This way, we will try to present the current state, but also present the opportunities for Serbian companies to take part in big projects.
