Since December 10, Serbia`s .RS internet domain has been available in the alphabets of 13 languages used in the country, and the registration began at 12 o`clock sharp. From now on, it will be possible to use 67 Latin script letters in registering one`s domain, eliminating the need for letter approximations.

On this occasion, the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS) organized a gathering at the Belgrade City Library, where the advantages of an IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) were presented by experts from the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications, the Office for Information Technologies and Electronic Government, ICANN and RNIDS.

The guests were addressed on behalf of RNIDS by Director Vladimir Manic.

– Multilingualism is the future of the internet. We have now added 41 supported characters from 13 languages spoken in Serbia – Manic said.

The guests were also addressed by Irini Reljin, Assistant Minister of Telecommunications, and Mihailo Jovanovic, the director of the Office for IT and eGovernment.

Danko Jevtovic, a Member of the Board of Directors of ICANN, presented the work of this organization, which manages the global address structure of the internet and coordinates all organizations involved in its functioning.

Back in 2012, RNIDS enabled the registration of Cyrillic letters within the .SRB domain. Now, with this new addition, addresses within the .RS domain will be able to contain letters from Albanian, Bosnian, Croatian, Czech, German, Hungarian, Montenegrin, Romanian, Romani, Slovak, Slovenian and Wallachian.

The initial period of the registration of IDNs within the .RS domain, during which the current .RS registrars will have the right to register, will last until March 5, 2019. After that period, the registration will be free for all. More information can be found at viševredi.rs.
