All sewage in Pirot is let into the Nisava river, which is not large enough to self-filter. The town intends to build a modern waste water treatment facility, which should be located outside the town, downstream from the settled area.
The director of the PE Vodovod i Kanalizacija, Zoran Nikolic, says that the town has secured the location and that they are ready for the investment of KfW. It is assumed that the German bank will provide 95% of the money, as was the case in Leskovac and Vranje.
– The government is supposed to give authorization for several towns in Serbia, including Pirot. We have signed a pre-contract with KfW. Around EUR 10 million is meant for Pirot. We expect the feasibility study and project documentation to be prepared this year and the works to start in the next one – Nikolic says.
The facility would be in line with the EU’s environmental standards. Pirot already has a modern Regional Landfill, and this investment would solve another big problem.
– Bela Palanka and Nis would also benefit from the construction of this facility, as it would be built downstream from the settled area. We want Dimitrovgrad to get one such facility too – the director says.
The villages of Krupac and Izvor already have mini-facilities for the treatment of waste water, and the new capital facility should be located in the proximity of the former ATP on the road to Knjazevac.
