The now almost certain opening of the new Cukaru Peki copper and gold mine near Bor, which is expected to take place by 2022, makes the moving of the Bor Airport necessary, as the airport is located in an area where the mining exploitation is supposed to be carried out.

– The construction of the Bor Airport was paid by local residents. We support the opening of new mines, but our position is that the existing airport needs to be moved to another location as well. We had several talks with the heads of Canada's Nevsun, which used to manage the Cukaru Peki project, and we will now negotiate under the same conditions with the Chinese company Zijin, which has bought the Canadian company – says Aleksandar Milikic, the mayor of Bor.

According to the mayor, the Ministry of Transport supports the idea of the local self-government that a new airport needs to be built, as it is a strategically important spot in eastern Serbia.

– The Ministry of Defense has also emphasized the importance of the Bor Airport. We will talk with the new owner of the mine about how to solve this issue – Milikic underlined.

The Bor Airport takes up around 60 hectares. It has a 1,080-m runway, which is 30 meters wide, as well as a management building with a hangar.
