Serbia needs EUR 5 billion to solve waste water problem

(Illustration) An investment of around EUR 5 billion is needed in order for European standards to be implemented in the water management sector in Serbia and the ministry is ready to start an investment cycle for solving the problem of waste water treatment and waste management, Serbian Environment Minister Goran Trivan announced at his meeting with representatives of the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB).
The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Ministry of Finance and the director of the Public Investment Management Office, Marko Blagojevic, and one of the main topics of the meeting was the financing of the program of the construction of waste water treatment facilities in Serbia in line with the CEB criteria.
The legal frameworks, Serbia's strategic plans in the field of waste water treatment and the tasks within the EU accession process and the opening of Chapter 27 were also presented at the meeting.
A representative of the CEB delegation, Vitomir Miles Raguz, said that there was a great readiness to help Serbia realize the construction of the waste water treatment facilities, adding that it was not just an environmental question, but a social one as well.
With financial and technical support, the ministry will start preparing the project-technical documentation next year, the minister announced and emphasized the role of local self-governments in the process.
