AIK Banka acquires majority stake in Gorenjska Banka – First Serbian bank to enter EU market

AIK Banka has successfully finalized the procedure of acquiring a majority stake in Gorenjska Banka. With the acquisition of a 90.11% stake, it has become the new owner of the Slovenian bank. By strengthening its position in the region, AIK Banka also gets an opportunity to provide its clients with quality service in the EU, together with Gorenjska Banka.

On the other hand, as a strategic investor, AIK Banka will support the development of Gorenjska Banka into a strong regional bank present in the entire market of Slovenia, emphasized the president of the Executive Board of AIK Banka and the president of the Supervisory Board of Gorenjska Banka, Jelena Galic.

– With the acquisition of Gorenjska Banka, we have become the first bank from Serbia to enter the market of the European Union. Our goal is for Gorenjska Banka to become a strong national bank, as well as an international bank, together with AIK Banka. The fact that we've met all the conditions for this procedure speaks to the strength and the sustainable development of the foundations on which AIK Banka bases its operations. We will continue to seek and consider all good opportunities in the region, in order to position as one of the leading players in the banking market in this part of Europe in time – Jelena Galic says.

According to the president of the Management Board of Gorenjska Banka, Mario Henjak, this Slovenian bank has gotten a strategic partner in AIK Banka, which has announced full support to the bank in its further development. A new banking group is thereby formed, which will have an important role in Slovenia and beyond in the future.

– Our strategic goal is to be recognized as one of the most innovative banks, not just in Slovenia, but in the region as well. In order to achieve this more easily, we will use the synergy of the new banking group, within which we will seek new opportunities. The new cooperation offers Gorenjska Banka the opportunity to exchange innovations and technology, as well as experiences with digitization, but also a good client base. I am convinced that, with the new strategic owner, AIK Banka, the financial power of Gorenjska Banka will further increase. Even after the acquisition, Gorenjska Banka continues to operate in line with the Slovenian and the EU banking regulations – Henjak emphasized.

Gorenjska Banka and AIK Banka plan the development of new products and joint services in 2019. As a result of this cooperation, Slovenian companies which operate in the Serbian market have already been provided with favorable tariffs, and the same is true for Serbian companies operating in Slovenia.

Since yesterday, clients can use both banks' ATMs without a fee in both Slovenia and Serbia.
