EBRD to make decision about loan for modernization of city railways in Belgrade on October 20th
EBRD will make the decision about approval of 35m EUR worth of loan for modernization of the city railways in Belgrade on October 20th.
According to the website of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (www.ebrd.com), that finance institution intends to finance modernization of the Belgrade railways in association with the European Investment Bank, which should also grant the loan of 35m EUR. Total value of the project is estimated at 88.5m EUR.
As the creditor explained, modernization of the Belgrade railways will include transformation of "Beovoz", the operator of the city railways, owned by "Serbian Railways", into the joint venture majority owned by the city of Belgrade.
"Serbian Railways" and City of Belgrade signed the agreement in June on improvement of railway traffic in Belgrade, which anticipates investment of 109.9m EUR in the Belgrade railways within the next six years.
It was said on that occasion that Belgrade would provide about 30m EUR for improvement of the railway infrastructure, while about 80m EUR would be provided from the international loans for procurement of 20 electric trains.
The Mayor of Belgrade, Dragan Đilas, said in June that the railway tracks should connect Batajnica and the Pančevo bridge, via Prokop station, within one year. Đilas also announced that the railways should connect Ripanj, Mladenovac and Lazarevac, including other suburban settlements like Grocka, Sopot and Barajevo, within next four years.
