Quality apples require care, lobbying and adapting to new varieties
Comments
Taking care of the skin of apples is very important, as the price and the demand in the modern market are more often determined by look than quality, says Professor Franci Stampar of the Biotechnical Faculty in Ljubljana. He explains that the exterior appearance is something that it is being worked on intensively and in several ways too.
– Most efforts pertain to preventive use of clay. Five kilograms per hectare are required for each treatment. Clay covers the fruit and protects the skin from water damage. Recent experiences show that no one wants to buy apples with damaged skin. Sulfur has similar protective characteristics, but can only be used two to three times, as it can burn leaves when combined with certain pesticides, and can even burn the skin on the fruit – Stampar explained at the Gathering of Fruit Growers in Gruza.
He adds that gibberellins, hormones that the plant creates itself, are used the most in treating the skin of the fruit.
When it comes to global apple market, Stampar says that around 2,000 hectares of new plantations were established in Russia this year. However, he explains that this country has plenty of old plantations which will deteriorate.
– Climate change affects Russia as well, so this country will need to import apples in 10, 20 or 30 years, as its own production will be insufficient – Stampar says.
He believes that there's a lack of balance when it comes to quality in Serbia, as there are both top quality producers and a considerable number of those who are at the bottom of the ladder.
– I believe that producers in Serbia need to connect with producers in Europe and thereby create lobbies and clubs, which will sell apples. On the other hand, I recommend adapting to new varieties, following trends and planting new varieties, as this gives you the opportunity to be alone in the market for at least 14 days, which makes for up to 30% higher prices.
