Surcin-Obrenovac highway section to open for traffic on December 19

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic today visited the bridge over the Sava and the Kolubara, which connects the Belgrade municipalities of Surcin and Obrenovac, together with Chinese Ambassador to Serbia Chen Bo, the presidents of the two municipalities and the director of the PE Roads of Serbia, and announced that the section would open for traffic on December 19.

Mihajlovic said that the construction of the highway section between Surcin and Obrenovac was an example to be followed by all other projects in Serbia. She added that one side of the bridge was complete and that it was possible to cross from one coast to the other, the ministry announced.

– This is a project where everything is going as planned and I believe that the promise made by the Chinese company to President Vucic will be fulfilled and that the bridge will be completed by December 19. In August, we will open the section from Obrenovac to Preljina in the length of 103 km, and by winter, we will open this section as well, that is, a total of 120 km of highways. This is our strategic goal, to connect people – she said.

Chen Bo expressed her satisfaction that Chinese companies and workers had contributed to the project.

– This is my second time at this construction site. We have connected the two coasts, which is very important for local residents. I am sure that, by mid-December, the entire highway section will be completed. I want to thank the deputy prime minister and her team for their supports – she said.

Miroslav Cuckovic, the president of the municipality of Obrenovac, said that it was important for the citizens of both Obrenovac and Surcin for the bridge to be completed.

– We propose for the bridge to be named after the presidents of Serbia and China, as it symbolizes the friendship between the two nations – he said.

Stevan Susa, the president of the municipality of Surcin, emphasized that the completion of the bridge was very useful for the citizens of the two municipalities.

– The most important thing is that we will unload regional and local roads and move cargo and transit traffic from the center. We are grateful for the fact that this project will be completed on time – he said.

Let us remind that the construction works on the bridge on the Kolubara and the Sava are being carried out by China Communications Construction Company. The PE Roads of Serbia is the investor, and the works are financed by the Government of Serbia, that is, by the Ministry of Construction.

The value of the works is EUR 209 million, and the section is 17.6 kilometers long. The project entails the construction of a full-profile highway, with four driving lanes and two emergency lanes in the total width of 29 meters.

The bridge on the Sava and the Kolubara is 1,581 kilometers long and around 95% of the works on the structure have been completed. Around 60% of the works on the hydro-insulation of the pedestrian lanes have also been completed and 44% of the pedestrian lanes and 55% of the curbs have been paved with concrete.
