Subotica was visited by the head of the EU delegation to Serbia, Sem Fabrizi, within the “Look Around You” campaign. He visited the Regional Center for Solid Waste Management, where a test phase was initiated on July 1.

– Without the help of the Government of Serbia and the Provincial Government, which are our partners in all big projects, we would not be able to finish everything. We don't have too many goals, but we realize those we set – said Mayor of Subotica Bogdan Laban, as announced on the city's website.

Fabrizi pointed out that the list of projects financed by the EU in this city indicated that Subotica had displayed enough ability to utilize EU funds in the right way.

– The construction of the Regional Center was a complex project entailing numerous components, but Subotica can be proud as it is the first place in Serbia to get an integrated solid waste management system – Fabrizi emphasized.

The construction of the Regional Center for Solid Waste Management is an investment worth EUR 24 million, of which EUR 20 million was a donation from the EU.

While visiting the Regional Center, Deputy Mayor Timea Horvat, emphasized that, in addition to Subotica, the center covered Senta, Kanjiza, Backa Topola, Mali Idjos, Coka and Novi Knazevac, an area with around 260,000 residents.

– The local self-government takes care of the environment and the construction of the Regional Center is a good example of contributing to a healthier environment – Timea Horvat said.

Subotica is the third city in Serbia encompassed by the one-day tour of the facilities built with the support of the EU and the presentation of environmental projects, after Uzice and Sabac.

The campaign is organized by the Delegation of the European Union in Serbia and the Ministry of European Integration, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection, with the aim of introducing the public to the efforts of the state institutions, local self-governments and the European Union towards improving environmental protection in Serbia and raising awareness of the importance of the environment.
