Sarajevo to build new tram route – Authorities also support procurement of trams worth EUR 40 million

The Government of the Canton of Sarajevo (SC) authorized the capital project of the construction of the tram route Ilidza-Hrasnica on Thursday, October 17. The realization of this project will require BAM 46 million (EUR 23 million), according to the estimate. The project is harmonized with the SC development strategy until 2020 and is part of the SC draft program of public investments for the period between 2020 and 2022.

– We expect that we might get a building permit in a short amount of time – said Adnan Steta, the transport minister of SC.

The project dates back to 1985 and now features an additional 12 kilometers of railroads and 16 new stations.

At the same session, the government authorized the project of the upgrade of the tram rolling stock using the estimated amount of BAM 80 million (EUR 40 million). The project envisages the procurement of 20 new trams.

Tram traffic in Sarajevo is carried out on 24.5 kilometers of railroads, with an average of 39 trams, whereas the current schedule requires 51 vehicles. The rolling stock consists of several kinds of trams of an average age of 37.

The government also authorized the rehabilitation of trolley overhead contact lines and traction substations for the establishment of trolley transport to Vogosca, at an estimated amount of BAM 9.84 million (less than EUR 5 million).

– Be establishing a trolley line to Vogosca, around 24,000 passengers could be transported each day. It would also help reduce air pollution in Sarajevo and increase the quality of the transport of passengers in Sarajevo – Steta said.
