EU motions for universal phone charger

The European Parliament has voted for a solution for all phones to use the same type of charger in the future, with 582 votes for and 40 against. A total of 37 votes were withheld.

The proposition, which would make iPhone users change the type of charger they use, is opposed by several tech companies, primarily Apple.

The Parliament claims that a universal charger type would make it easier for users to charge any device using any charger.

The implementation of the new rule is supposed to force manufacturers of consumer electronics (phones, tablets, readers, cameras and watches) to adapt their devices to the potential universal charger.

The European Commission has until July to start implementing the decision.
