The bridge has the form of a wooden supported structure, with a wooden surface and a wooden railing. In the past years, the bridge has not been repaired and the intense use has led to damage, rot and cracking in certain parts, in both the supporting section and the surface section.
The bridge is now fully reconstructed, and the wooden structure has been replaced as part of the efforts to preserve the bridge as a cultural good and ensure the safety of the visitors.
The Karadjordje Gate was built in the early 18th century. It was later named after the leader of the First Serbian Uprising, and it was believed for a long time that Karadjordje entered the fortress through this gate. It is now known that this is not true and that he entered the fortress by the main road, that is, through the Outer Stambol Gate.
The gate was out of use for a long time, and maps dating back to the late 18th century show it as walled-in and don't feature the bridge. It was re-opened as part of the reconstruction of Kalemegdan following World War II, when the wooden bridge was reconstructed as well.
